The Dominican Republic is a country in the Greater Antilles. It occupies about two thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea, with Haiti occupying the western third of the island. Spanish is the official language of this country with a population of about 9.2 million.
Santo Domingo, the capital, is the largest city. Santiago de los Caballeros is the second largest city. The five main airports hosting large numbers of tourists from North America and Europe are located in Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana and El Catey in Samana.
